
Tom and Myrtle are adulterers and truly studies in unlikeable characters both. They are as decadent and hedonistic as the roaring 20s at their worst. They create an odd sadness with their misguided and abusive relationship - symbolic of how lost America maybe was then, during prohibition and shortly after with the great crash.
